CROSSWORD POWER is specifically designed to be simple to
understand and easy to use. It requires very little knowledge of
computers. No commands need to be memorized. The menus allow
easy movement through the program so you can begin producing and
printing puzzles in just a few minutes. Help is available by
pressing the F1 function key.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatible 512K
One disk drive (second recommended) or hard drive

Letter Quality, LaserJet II/III, DeskJet or Graphics Printer
MS-DOS Version 2.1 or greater
CAPABILITIES OF CROSSWORD POWER:
Puzzle size can be varied from 3 to 24 columns and from 3 to
17 rows. Large squares for puzzle letters (3 1/3 per inch).
Puzzles can be printed in 10, 12, 15, or 17 pitch type.
Depending on your printer, clues can be printed in either
10, 12, 15, or condensed (16.66) pitch type.
Up to 80 words will be placed automatically in each puzzle.
Puzzle words can be up to 18 characters long. Clues can be up to
100 characters long. Words and clues can easily be added,
deleted, printed, or changed at any time.
Words and clues from previously used word lists can be added
automatically to displayed puzzles. Words can also be
manually entered into the displayed puzzle at any time.
CROSSWORD POWER also supports the optional font cartridge of the
EpsonLQ printer. Downloaded fixed-width soft fonts and fixed-
width font cartridges for the DeskJet and LaserJet II/III
printers are also supported.
If your monitor supports EGA screens, puzzles can also be
displayed and captured as a PCX graphic. These graphics can be
imported into desk top publishing (and some word processing)
programs.
A variety of puzzles can be created and printed from each list of
words and clues. This option allows teachers to stress the same
vocabulary but give different puzzles to their students. This
has been a proven effective method for learning vocabulary words.
CROSSWORD POWER is not copy protected. Backups of all files can
be made using normal disk copying procedures.

NEW:
This selection removes all puzzles and word lists from the
computer's memory. Since a puzzle no longer exists in the
computer's memory, the status line shows 0 words.
ABOUT THE WORD LISTS:
Each word list can have up to 100 words and related clues.
Word lists can be combined to place up to 80 words in each
puzzle. Every word list may be reused in new puzzles. This
allows the user to review previously learned vocabulary too.
All files created by CROSSWORD POWER may be copied and erased
using the normal DOS commands.
ABOUT THE PUZZLE WORDS (ANSWERS):
Words may be up to 18 characters long. Any character except the
space, comma, asterisk *, double quote ", vertical bar |, and
number sign # can be used in a puzzle word. Even numbers can be
used to create math puzzles.
ABOUT THE CLUES (DEFINITIONS):
Each clue can be up to 100 characters long. Long clues are
automatically divided if necessary. Any character except the
double quote " and comma can be used in a clue.
SECOND WORDLIST:
Additional words from other word lists may be added to a
displayed puzzle. Up to 80 words can be placed in each
CROSSWORD POWER Page 6
puzzle. After selecting, an additional word list will be read
from the diskette. CROSSWORD POWER will attempt to fit the
additional words into the current puzzle. The additional
words will be displayed as they are inserted into the puzzle.
Duplicate words will not be entered into the puzzle. This
selection may be repeated to add words from additional word
lists. Pressing the Escape key while the wordlist names are
displayed will remove the second wordlist.
MANIPULATING THE WORDLIST:
Words and clues can be automatically changed to upper and
lower case letters, be sorted by length, alphabetized, and
randomized.
The F1 function key can be pressed to provide more information
about editing the puzzle words and clues. Alternate-F1 displays
foreign language codes, Shift-F1 displays math symbols, Control-
F1 displays Greek characters when editing.
ABOUT WORD AND CLUE FORMATTING:
Puzzle words can be changed back and forth between capital and
lower case letters. It is easier to work with all capital
letters. However, sometimes lower case letters are necessary.
For example, in chemistry, CO means Carbon Monoxide and Co means
Cobalt. This program treats capital letters and lower case
letters as two different letters. This means that words will not
intersect at a common letter if one is a capital letter and the
other is lower case letter.
ABOUT SORTING, ALPHABETIZING, AND RANDOMIZING WORD ORDER:
The word list order is used to determine which words are placed
in a puzzle first. Changing the order of the words allows
different puzzles to be created.
HINTS:
Placing the longest words into a puzzle first does not guarantee
that more total words will be placed into a puzzle.
Each time a word list is randomized, the order of the puzzle
words and clues is changed.
Different puzzles can be used by teachers to stress the same
vocabulary words but wanting to give students different puzzles.
The different puzzles allow verbal interaction to learn the
puzzle words and clues.

PUZZLE SIZE:
Puzzle size may be varied from 3 to 24 columns wide and from 3 to

columns that do not contain letters.
ABOUT CLUE PITCH:
The DeskJet/LaserJet and EpsonLQ printers support all pitches.
DeskJet/LaserJet printers may require downloading of 12 and 15
pitch fixed-width fonts for proper printing. Some supported

The EpsonFX printers support 10, 12, and 17 pitch. All printers
support 10 pitch. All printers except the EpsonMX support 12
pitch. The 17 pitch selection is actually condensed (16.67)
pitch. Proportional spaced fonts are not supported.

The EpsonLQ, DeskJet family, and LaserJet II printers also
support 15 and 16.66 (condensed) characters per inch. The
EpsonLQ optional font module is supported giving the user six

The LaserJet II and DeskJet printers have built in fixed-width
Courier 10 and 16.67 pitch fonts. Printing 12 and 15 pitch clues

LJCFONTS at the DOS command line. Then run CROSSWORD POWER.
Puzzles are always printed in 10 pitch/12 point fonts. Other
typefaces and font sizes can be used for the clues. The
puzzle and clues will be printed in the same typeface. Other
typefaces should use the PC-8 character set which include the
line draw characters. If the printer can not find a font, it
will make a substitution. The puzzle size can be manipulated
if it is captured as an EGA graphic file and imported into a
desktop publishing program or Word Perfect version 5.1.
